How do I sell my gold?

Gold Smart® customers have several options to choose from: Our proprietary (and free!) courier pack, an appointment at our offices in central Auckland, or alternatively you can send your items in via the track and trace courier of your choice. Want to know more? Be sure to visit our How to Sell page to view more information on selling your gold and precious metal items.

How do you determine the value of my gold items?

The Gold Smart® team use several factors to determine an offer for selling gold items. This includes the overall weight of gold and silver in a piece of jewellery, coin, scrap or bullion; the purity of that metal and the current trading market price. In general, the heavier the metal weight and higher purity will result in a higher offer to you. Once Gold Smart® determines the value, we will present you a cash price to buy your precious metal items – with absolutely no pressure and no hassle.

We have provided a ‘Gold Price Calculator’ to enable you to get a quick idea of the value of your gold items. This is an indication ONLY and we do need to see items in person to determine a precise weight and purity of items you wish to sell.

The Gold Smart® Gold Price Calculator can be found on the What We Buy page.

Why should I sell my gold and silver today?

Gold and silver prices have risen considerably over the last few years and with recent record levels spurring on investors, the market for selling unwanted or broken gold jewellery has never been better! While there is relative stability in the precious metal market, buy prices can change rapidly depending on the New Zealand Dollar to United States Dollar (NZD to USD) exchange rate. So many New Zealand customers choose to sell to Gold Smart®, allowing them the freedom to save, spend and invest in ways most optimal for them.

What is Gold Smart looking to buy?

Whether the item is old, outdated, unwanted, or broken, Gold Smart® is ready to buy your gold items for a great price. We buy gold jewellery and scrap in any condition, weight and fineness. Additionally, we buy other precious metals such as platinum, palladium, and silver, as well as gold coins, bullion and bars. Visit our What We Buy page to find out more about the types of precious metal items we buy.

What happens to the stones in the jewellery?

As we do not purchase stones, any gems, diamonds or other precious stones in your jewellery can be removed by our staff and returned to you on request. You can ask our friendly staff about this option when having your items assessed.

Can I bring my gold to Gold Smart in person?

Yes – absolutely! You are welcome to visit our Auckland walk-in location and meet the team. Be sure to contact us first by phone, email, chat or through our website contact page so we can discuss your items and schedule an appointment. Throughout the selling process you will be treated with respect, discretion and confidentiality.

How do I send my old gold jewellery to you?

The process is easy and secure! Simply complete our simple enquiry form and check the tick box and the bottom that reads “Yes, send me a Gold Smart® Courier Pack”. Once your Gold Smart® Courier Pack arrives, follow the enclosed instructions and courier it back to us for appraisal. Once your pack is received, our dedicated gold experts will assess each piece and determine a value for your quote. When you decide to accept the offer, we’ll deposit payment promptly in the account of your choice. If you elect not to go ahead, we will securely ship your items back to you at no cost, the following business day.

What if I’m not sure my jewellery is real?

No problem! Our team of experts are on hand to test your items and determine their value, all at no cost to you.

Are Gold Smart courier packs insured?

Yes, our courier packs are specifically and fully insured for peace-of-mind by a third-party insurer.

What are gold spot prices?

The gold spot price is the current international price used to determine the rate for a single troy ounce of gold. This price is dictated by market speculation, world events, currency values and an array of other factors. These prices can be dynamic, changing every few seconds when the markets are open.

For transparency, we have provided live gold and silver spot prices in New Zealand dollars at the top of every page on our website (when viewing in desktop mode).

What items do you NOT buy?

The items that we are unable to buy include:

  • Diamonds and gemstones
  • Plated Jewellery
  • Plated Cutlery and Silverware
  • Gold plated watches – except for some brands such as Rolex
  • Any items which do not contain precious metals

Please chat with our friendly team for more advice.

How do you test my gold?

We use a range of advanced methods to ensure accurate results. These include x-ray fluorescence, ultrasound, acids and other scientific measurement devices. This equipment is calibrated to ensure precise accuracy and results.

How do I verify my ID?

By law we are required to verify the identity of anyone selling gold to us (under the Secondhand Dealers & Pawnbrokers Act). This is as simple as bringing your government-issued ID (Passport, Driver’s license, etc.) to us when you sell gold.

If you are using our courier pack service then verifying your ID is as simple as taking your photo ID to a Justice of the Peace, Solicitor, Registrar of the Court or Senior Police offer. They will sight your ID, make a copy and verify it for you. You then simply include this with your courier pack when you send your items in for gold appraisal and testing.

Is there parking available if I come to see you?

Yes, there is plenty of free and easily accessible parking. The Gold Smart® team will advise when you make your appointment with us. Please let us know if you’d like a map with parking options emailed to you before your meeting with us.

What information will you require from me?

Gold Smart® adheres to the Secondhand Dealers and Pawnbrokers Act, and as such we require your full name, address, date of birth, phone number and government issued photo ID such as a drivers licence or passport.
